Woodland Social Enterprises and the Planning System (research)

The planning system plays a crucial role in the development of woodland social enterprises (WSEs). Enterprises often need new developments to develop their projects or make them sustainable. In particular this is likely to include permission to have dwellings on the land and/ or permission to develop new infrastructure to develop the business. Negative planning decisions can challenge the viability of WSEs, however the planning system also plays an important role in preventing damaging developments. To support WSEs and sustainable woodland management we need to understand key issues and best practice.

This research was commissioned as part of the Making Local Woods Work project.
